Google TV Update Rolls Out Today, Already Hitting Select Sony Internet TV Devices

Posted: October 31st, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Gadgets | Tags: , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

sony-tv-update-2

The much-anticipated Google TV update is systematically rolling out today. Sony Internet TV devices are first in line followed by Logitech Revue units shortly thereafter. But wait patiently. As with most major updates, the OTA update will not hit all the boxes at once, but rather at a selective pace. You can initiate a manual check under the About section in the Settings menu, but a notification should pop-up when your box’s number has been called.

It’s still not available on my Sony Internet TV but the update is already in the wild per a screenshot from AndroidCentral.

Google announced the big update last week. It brings to Google TV the Android Market along with a totally new user interface. Plus, the system is now built on the newer Android 3.1 release, which should make for a much smoother experience. Google TV has always shown so much promise and this latest coat of paint improves its draw even more. But only the consumer marketplace will decide if the overhaul ultimately spurs a GTV revival.

Droid Razr To Taste Ice Cream Sandwich Update In Q1 2012

Posted: October 19th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Gadgets | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

razr7

Motorola’s Droid Razr made quite the splash yesterday thanks in part to its impressive hardware, but the Android build that it runs seems bit quaint now thanks to Ice Cream Sandwich. No worries, though: if you pick up a Droid Razr when it ships in November, you should be getting the Android 4.0 update in early 2012.

News of the Ice Cream Sandwich release window came courtesy of Alain Mutricy, Motorola Mobility’s SVP of Portfolio and Product Management. He seemed to be very forthcoming while speaking at a Berlin press conference, mentioning that Droid Razr users will receive the update sometime in Q1 2012, and that Motorola is working to get the Droid Razr’s hallmark features working in Ice Cream Sandwich.

Among those features is Motocast, a nifty way to directly stream media and content from your PC to your Droid Razr. And who could forget Smart Actions, the context-sensitive app that manages device settings according to user-defined situations? The Droid Razr wouldn’t be the Droid Razr without them, so a little extra time to get things working is to be expected.

It’s a bummer for those who wanted (or hoped) to see Motorola’s hardware combined with Google’s latest-and-greatest OS, but at least the Droid faithful have something to look forward to.

Google TV reminds us it’s still around; security update coming, Honeycomb later

Posted: September 22nd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Android | Tags: , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Google TV

The Google TV Twitter account came alive tonight, giving warning of an impending "minor security update for tomorrow" for some devices. We'll go out on a limb and guess that's the Logitech Revue — that only one that actually sold any units, especially after it hit $99.

Some Google TV devices will receive a minor security update tomorrow. Stay tuned, a bigger update is headed your way in the weeks ahead.

But security updates really aren't that exciting, especially since we're still waiting on Honeycomb to hit the boob box. And it's coming in the weeks ahead, says @googletv. We're making our popcorn now.

Samsung Replenish to get EF27 update on July 18

Posted: July 14th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Android | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Samsung Replenish

Another thing we found while digging through the leaked Sprint playbook was a maintenance release update for the Samsung Replenish, scheduled to hit July 18.  With it will come enhancements to the LED, a fix that sounds the roaming alert before roaming is activated, and a fix for the issue of the ##RTN# attribute resetting to all zeros that was introduced with ED23.

While it’s not a major OS update to Gingerbread, it’s refreshing to see issues and bugs get quickly fixed.  If you’re using a Replenish, you’ll be notified when the update is sent to your phone, and given installation instructions at that time.

Thanks, Anon!

Samsung Fascinate recieves minor software update

Posted: June 14th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Android | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

Verizon Fascinate OTA

It looks like owners of the Fascinate will start seeing a minor update pushed out to their devices soon.  The update seems to be rather small and the only two changes listed are:

  • Improved incoming call connectivity
  • Improvements to how OTA’s are delivered to the device.

Several members in our forums apparently already have the update, so if you haven’t received it yet, you should.  In the mean time, you can look at the official change log after the break.

New 360 Update Rolling Out, Old 360 Update Bricking Some Consoles

Posted: May 19th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Gadgets | Tags: , , , , | 4 Comments »

Microsoft is rolling out a new update to the Xbox 360 which adds a few new features. Gamers in some countries can now link their PayPal accounts to their 360s and buy stuff that way, and standby mode has been tweaked.

Coincident with this update (coming over the next two weeks) comes the news that a recent firmware update adding support for the new expanded disc capacity feature may not be playing nicely with some 360s. But don’t worry, Microsoft is on the case. In fact, you might wish yours was getting bricked.

From Microsoft:

Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs. This issue manifests itself a as a unique ‘disc unreadable’ or ‘disc unsupported’ error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.

The unlucky/lucky few will receive a brand spanking new 250GB Xbox 360 S and a year of Xbox Live Gold access. If you’re having this problem, contact Microsoft here to start the process.

Good on them for doing the right thing here, though apparently the bricking has been happening for a little while now. After the rocky launch (never forget) of the 360 and in the light of Sony’s continuing hacking troubles, Microsoft’s generous customer service is no surprise.
